As evidenced by his early affinity for animal sounds, Owen has always had a love for animals. He still really likes animals and now can say many of their names as well as imitate their sounds (we're hoping to compile an updated video soon). We had a couple recent outings to see some animals up close.
First, we went to Maryland at the beginning of August to attend the Howard County fair, checking out all the farm animals. Even though we somehow picked the hottest day of the summer to go, Owen still had a great time and loved seeing all the farm animals. The funniest part was the pig races - they set up a small track and have these small pigs that race around. Its pretty funny and everyone gets into cheering for their designated pig. One lucky kid from each section is picked to be the cheerleader, rallying the rest of the crowd to cheer their pig onto victory. Owen was a little unsure at first but quickly was cheering along with the rest of us. They then announced that the final race would be ducks (a special breed called Indian runner ducks). The emcee asked the crowd to flap their wings and quack in order to pick the cheerleaders for this race - Owen knew just what to do and began quacking and flapping his heart out. He was picked as our section's cheerleader and had a great time cheering our duck onto a victory!
Over Labor Day weekend, we had a rainy day while getting together with family in Elkton, MD. So, we decided to check out Cecil County's premier zoo, the Plumpton Park Zoo in Rising Sun, MD. We were expecting a fairly small operation (claiming to be Cecil County's largest zoo is not too hard to do), but we were pleasantly surprised by the variety of animals there - including a tiger, giraffe, and brown bear. Owen had a great time and kept asking for the weeks afterwards if we could go back and see the animals with his Oma and Opa.
